It’s official - WE DID IT!!!
Another gray rainy start in Martinborough this morning, with a quick 25kms through the back roads around Featherstone to reach Cross Creek and the start of the Rimutaka Cycle Trail for our big Hill of the day.
It’s a lovely track up the hill, around an 8% gradient but definitely doable and quite enjoyable through the regenerating bush around the track. The tunnels are a highlight - Mike remembered his two head lights haha
Even some official ‘hike a bike’ through where the track has washed out, and some pretty waterfalls and great historical info as you track upwards.
We reached the summit around 12pm and headed down the gentle slope on the other side, thankfully to discover that the other side of the hill featured blue sky and some sun for our ride into Wellington!
The bottom of the track leads into the Hutt River Cycle Trail which follows the river all the way down into Petone waterfront and then heads around the hill following the road into the city. Gorgeous views for us of the harbour and the city from the Cycle Trail.
We hit the Wellington waterfront to finish this year’s leg of Cycle for Sight around 5pm!!!
Also tired and sore, both of us stoked with the achievement of riding the whole North Island and so far raising nearly $3000 for the Fred Hollows Foundation.
We would love to reach our $5000 goal, the Givealittle page will be up till the end of the month, please do visit the page and donate if you haven’t already (seeing as we have now officially made it 😉), this Foundation does such great work for the needlessly blind in the Pacific.
A MASSIVE thank you to all of you for your support, it was a fantastic feeling to have you all behind us for the trip 😊
We now head back to Hamilton tomorrow morning, looking forward to catching up with friends and family.
Yours in bikepacking,
Mike & Claire
